The Erasmusbrug, built in September 1996 to cross Rotterdam’s Nieuwe Maas, features Europe’s largest bascule bridge. This bridge was named after the Dutch catholic theologian and philosopher Erasmus as an honor for the city’s new most prominent landmark. The Erasmusbrug is the combination of a cable-stayed and bascule bridge, often nicknamed “Swan” due to its particular shape.
