Visited by over 2 million East Asians every year, the Tottori Sand Dunes are the only large dune system of Japan. Spanning over 30 square kilometers and having existed for over 100,000 years, the Tottori dunes are threatened by the Japanese government’s reforestation program and the anti-tsunami embankments ashore.
