The current seat of the Archbishop of Vienna in Austria, Saint Stephen’s Cathedral is today considered the most important and symbolic religious building in the city. Founded in 1137 following the signing of the Treaty of Mautern, the church was dedicated to St Stephen ten years later. Duke Rudolf IV began an expansion project in 1359, aiming to add parts of the Gothic style, but the project encompassed the whole of the church.
