Peter and Paul Fortress

Under the authority of the Museum of History, the Peter and Paul Fortress has enough inside its walls to keep visitors busy for at least a day. Historically the first citadel of Saint Petersburg, it was founded in the early 18th century during the Northern War in order to protect the capital. The Fortress is also the center of many of St. Petersburg's urban rituals, including the regular shooting of the Naryshkin Bastion cannon at noon. During the summer, visitors can enjoy the beach on the fortress’s island as a nice picnic spot and access a number of activities such as festivals and concerts.
