Created by the flooding of the Glen Canyon generated by the Glen Canyon Dam from 1956, the lake acts as both a water storage and recreational area. The lake can store up to 23,322,000 acre-feet of water while at full capacity. In fact, upon completion in 1963, it took over 16 years to fill to its current average level.
