Created between six and five million years ago after an uplifting of the North American tectonic plate, this horseshoe-shaped meander of the Colorado River known as Horseshoe Bend now sits 3,200 feet (980 meters) above sea level. It became famous and an important tourist destination in recent years, mostly thanks to social medias.
