Fort São Sebastião

Built-in 1558 by the Portuguese to defend Mozambique Island and its bay, the fort is considered the most important of its kind in Sub-Saharan Africa. At first, it may have looked like an unlikely contender for Africa's oldest European building, yet is for sure the oldest and most impressive fortress in Mozambique’s history.
