Once an island where rebellious slaves were detained before being sold, it became in the 1920s a prison complex project turned into a quarantine facility for all British East African territories. Nowadays, tourists can spend a day on the island to relax on the beach, at a small private hotel recently opened, or admire the rare Aldabra giant tortoises that live there.
