Gravensteen is a castle in Ghent, Belgium, that gets its name from the Dutch word "graaf," meaning "count". Though the castle was first built in the 12th century by Philip of Alsace, it is one of the best-preserved medieval fortresses in Europe. The castle has been open as a museum since the beginning of its restoration in 1892 and is a major landmark of the city.
